01

Do I need a shelter for my baby Highland cow?

Yes—at least when they’re little! These fluff balls are small and more vulnerable in their first year, so we recommend keeping them secure at night. By the time they hit the one-year mark, they’re usually good to roam, but it’s always your call. For us, it’s just not worth the risk.

02

How much space do I need for a Highland cow?

Not as much as you might think! Ideally, plan for about ½ to 1 acre per cow. They love space to graze, but they’re also happy as long as they have good food, fresh water, and a buddy (yep, cows are social).

03

How much time + money does it take to care for a Highland cow?

Honestly, they’re pretty low-maintenance for something this cute. After they’re weaned, their diet is mostly hay and grass, with a little grain on the side.

Expect them to eat about 2% of their body weight in hay/grass per day and about a pound of grain daily. That breaks down to about $1 per cow per day, depending on your area and hay quality.

Medical care? Regular vaccinations and the occasional vet check-up are good practice.

Time-wise, most days you’re looking at 10-15 minutes of feeding and water checks. Grooming, paddock cleaning, and wintertime chores take a little longer, but overall, it’s a pretty easy routine.

04

Can I leave my Highland cows for a weekend?

Yep! As long as they have plenty of food and water, they’re good to go.

05

How can I get my kids involved in caring for a Highland cow?

Mini Highlanders are like the golden retrievers of the cow world—adorable, friendly, and the perfect size for kids. Even toddlers can help toss hay, scoop grain, refill water, and (everyone’s favorite) brush their long, gorgeous hair.

Teaching kids about animal safety and respect is key, especially since these cows do have horns, but overall, they make fantastic farm buddies.
